President Donald Trump has recently made history by being the first US President to be impeached twice following the Capitol riots on January 6. Aside from that, he also got banned from various social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
On January 7, a day after the storming of the US Capitol building, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted on his platform: “The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden. His decision to use his platform to condone rather than condemn the actions of his supporters at the Capitol building has rightly disturbed people in the US and around the world.”
“We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great,” he had added. “Therefore, we are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete.”
But now, less than two weeks after, reports have come in claiming that the president has gotten his account back.
Neither Facebook nor CEO Zuckerberg has given any statements since then, but there has also been no activity on either of the accounts since. No reports have also been made about whether the president even has access to those accounts.
The account restorations are considered odd since it was done “quietly,” especially after Zuckerberg made it clear that Trump could not have his accounts back “until the peaceful transition of power is complete.”
The president’s social media platforms’ banning garnered mixed reactions from the public, but most were focused on censorship. While some agree with the banning, others took to the platforms to voice their opinions.
Others have also commented on the recent return of the president’s accounts. They have also not missed the opportunity to slam the tech giants.
