DLA Piper, the law firm of Kamala Harris’ husband, consults on behalf of many Chinese Communist Party-owned companies. The law firm also employs several former Communist Party officials.

DLA Piper, a multination law firm owned by the husband of Kamala Harris, boasts 30 good years of experience working with Communist Party-owned Chinese companies, and 140 lawyers are dedicated to its “China Investment Services” branch.

Harris’ strong association with the company is through her husband, Douglas Emhoff. The latter has been a partner of the company’s intellectual property and technology practice and its media, sports, and entertainment domain since 2017.

DLA Piper has a well-established and embedded China desks in both the US and Europe to assist their China-focused consulting. Now, the strong business relationship between the DLA Piper and Chinese Communist Party-owned companies could leverage the future White House policies in favor of CCP or represent a potential financial conflict of interest for the Vice-Presidential candidate from the Democratic Party.

Communist-Oriented Consultancy Business:

To pave the way for DLA Piper’s China practice, which has received many awards from China Business Law Journal and China Law and Practice, the law firm has always shown great interest in employing a host of CCP officials.

Ernest Yang, who heads the firm’s Litigation and Regulatory Department and serves as the Co-Head of International Arbitration, was appointed to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in 2013. Now the fact is that CPPCC serves the top-level of advisory board for the CCP, and Ernest Yang was promoted to the body’s standing committee in 2019.

Jessica Zhao, a senior advisor of DLA Piper, served as the Deputy Secretary-General of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), a government-owned body that was formed by the Chinese Communist Party in 2019. It was developed with the sole objective of promoting and furthering the international Chinese trade.

Another top-level employee of DLA Piper, Gloria Liu, who serves as the company’s partner, has represented the lead investors in making a deal with Bytedance, the parent company of TikTok. The said app is a controversial, set to be banned by President Donald Trump for its potential and compromised links with the Chinese Communist Party, which has been working hard to bring down the US economy for a long time.

All the hires of this DLA Piper serve to bolster DLA Piper’s China operation, which clearly outlines one thing that this company has a strong and highly well-established connection with the central and local authorities in China.

It’s not surprising that the higher officials of this organization have been working for the China government, especially the consultant James Philips, who identifies himself as having “advised” the Chinese Embassy in Canberra, Australia.

Chinese Community Party-based Payroll

DLA Piper has engaged in several business deals that left them under the direct or indirect payroll of the Chinese Communist Party. The law firm listed itself as a legal adviser of two Chinese government-owned- airlines: China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines.

DLA Piper also advised China Merchant Group, a state-owned company under the Chinese Communist Party’s direct supervision, on a whopping tech deal of $2.5 billion.

The CMG identifies itself as a crucial promoter and participant of China’s initiative of Belt and Road, the scheme made by the Chinese Communist Party to expand its economic and political control over the developing countries.
